Fratarica – the vertical thrill

Fratarica is a challenging but varied half-day canyon in the Soča Valley, and the one we recommend most. It is a perfect mix of waterfall abseils (with the 20 meter Katedralla and the 45 meter Parabola), exhilarating jumps and natural slides, not a vertical endurance test. You do not need prior experience if you are sporty and keep a cool head, because we teach the abseiling from the first small drop and the difficulty builds gradually. It rewards the effort with some of the finest canyon scenery in the Alps, inside Triglav National Park

Fratarica can absolutely be your first canyon if you are reasonably sporty and not specifically afraid of heights. Many first-timers do it directly and are delighted they did, because it is more varied and more beautiful than an easier canyon; just tell us it is your first descent when you book and we adapt the pace and teaching. If heights make you nervous or you want the gentlest option, Sušec is the softer start. Torn between them? Most sporty beginners are happier in Fratarica

The biggest abseil in Fratarica is the Parabola, at 45 meters, reached after smaller drops. We teach the technique on the small abseils first, so by the time you reach the Parabola it feels like a skill you have built rather than a leap into the void. Worst case scenario this one can be avoided by a walking path if needed.

In a Fratarica trip you learn to abseil for real: from the second or third drop you rig your own descender while the guide checks it and controls a backup from above. This is only possible because we cap groups at 6, where operators running 8 or more must keep the line moving and end up lowering guests like cargo. You should finish Fratarica having genuinely learned the skill. Except on the Parabola waterfall where the height is already challenging by itself we ususally hold the rope for you to feel safe.

he minimum age for Fratarica is 14, for sporty teenagers with a cool head. It sits somewhere between an adventure and a rite of passage, and motivated teens often enjoy it even more than the adults in the group.

Fratarica is a half-day of 3 to 4 hours, including a walk of around 25 minutes to the entry and roughly 2.5 hours of descent. You want a sportier baseline than for Sušec, because the day is a sustained mix of abseiling, downclimbing and swimming. If you exercise regularly and have no relevant injuries, you will be fine; a cool head matters more than big muscles.

Fratarica is safe run professionally: every abseil is rigged and checked by your guide, the water-level decision is made from river gauges and upstream weather, and our small groups mean the guide watches each person on the rope. Our lead guide holds the French DEJEPS state diploma which is one of the most recognised and demanding in the world.

A Fratarica trip includes all technical equipment (5 mm one-piece wetsuit, neoprene socks, Adidas proper canyoning shoes, harness with protective seat, helmet), your certified guide, and photos of the descent via QR link. You bring swimwear (girls can add a light sport short to use on the hike and keep under the wetsuit), a towel, dry clothes and water.

Yes, Fratarica lies within Triglav National Park, and it shows in the white sculpted limestone and the waterfall scenery. We run it with respect for the protected environment, which is part of how we operate across the valley.

If water levels or storms make a canyon unsafe, we cancel and you reschedule or receive a full refund. Light rain rarely stops a trip, since you are getting wet anyway, but rising water is the serious hazard, and that decision is ours to make from the river gauges and upstream weather, never a gamble you are pushed into. Heavy rain in the previous days can matter even under a blue sky, which is why we watch the data rather than the car-park weather.

The canyoning season in the Soča Valley runs from roughly May to October, with the reliable core from mid-June to mid-September. August has the warmest water; June and September are quieter and, for many guests, the most beautiful. Water ranges from around 8 to 10 degrees early season to 13 to 16 degrees at the summer peak, and our 5 mm wetsuits are chosen for the cold end of that range.

You should be able to swim a few relaxed meters without panic, but you do not need to be a strong swimmer. The wetsuit makes you very buoyant and the pools are calm. Genuine fear of water and canyons are a poor match, and if that is you, we will say so honestly rather than take the booking.

Yes, photos are included at no extra cost. Your guide photographs the whole descent along the way and sends you the pictures via a QR link shortly after the trip. There is no watermark and no upsell; they are your memories.

Our equipment is rated for guests up to about 115 kg. If you are close to that limit, message us before booking and we will advise you honestly about the right canyon and fit.
